This is my first weekly roundup of Keyword Research and Search Engine Marketing articles that I’ve stumbled across in the past week. It’s not a comprehensive list by any means, but they are posts that I’ve found in my travels and connected with in some way… in some cases I may not agree with all that’s written, but I do consider these articles are worth your time to read.
I plan on making this a regular weekly column, I hope you find it useful - as always, I’m open to suggestions on how to improve it, leave your suggestions in the comments.
I’m still ironing out all the kinks, tweaking the template and settling on my strategy… so only one post this week, New Techniques Needed for Keyword Analysis? is a little bit of a rant about how keyword analysis techniques haven’t really changed too much in the past six years despite the Internet landscape changing significantly… yes I know that’s a very general statement, and I know other people out there have advanced their techniques with the time, but the vast majority of advice that is still being regurgitated hasn’t really changed too much in that time.
Google announced this week that they are now including additional search boxes as additional information in some search results. These extra search boxes will allow users to refine their search by limiting their next search to that one domain (it adds site:domain.com to the end of their next search). This should mean a lot more ’search:’ keywords showing up in research in the near future, most of which will signify a more detailed search pattern than a regular search for that phrase… I’m not sure how we use that added relevance yet, but it is definitely something to keep in mind for the near future.
Microsoft’s adcenter blog posts about focusing on an exact match to boost your PPC campaign performace. Quite a detailed article that is well worth the read.
The webconfs.com SEO Toolset offers a post on ‘Keywords - the most important item in SEO’, there’s nothing groundbreakingly new in here, but lists a couple of handy tools and some decent advice aimed at the beginner.
I’m a little bit late on this one, but Link Building Best Practices posted a really good article about how to get legitimate one-way links from .edu sites. Most .edu sites are excellent sources to get links from and as long as you are on theme can really help to propel your search results, so legitimate, non-spammy ways of getting links from these sources is definitely something you should consider.
SEO is About More than Just Traffic is a quick look at why you should be focusing on your content and aiming for better conversions from your search traffic, rather than simply targeting high traffic keywords. Author Jeffrey Smith makes some good points about focusing on the end goals rather than traffic at any cost (which makes the article worth reading on a beginner level), but focuses almost entirely on on-page factors and doesn’t really go into how you can match your content to the appropriate keywords… something which I think might make a good post on KeywordSEM.com in the future.
There’s a few articles to brush up on, if you spot any good posts during the week that you think should be included in something like this, let me know as this article roundup will become a weekly event on KeywordSEM.com
